The Australian small business tax checklist for 2026

Most of the work of a clean lodgement happens before you talk to your accountant. Pull these together by 30 June and the rest is mechanical.

Every business

  • • Year-end bank statements for every business account
  • • Loan and credit facility statements showing 30 June balances
  • • Xero / accounting software access (or trial balance + GL if not on cloud)
  • • Asset purchases over $300 with invoices and dates
  • • Asset disposals with sale invoices
  • • Outstanding debtors and creditors as at 30 June
  • • Stock on hand count (if applicable)
  • • Motor vehicle log book (if claiming > cents-per-km)
  • • Home office hours / square metres (if claiming)
  • • All BAS lodgements for the year

If you have staff

  • • STP finalisation through your payroll software
  • • Super guarantee — confirmed paid for all four quarters
  • • Workers comp policy renewal & declarations
  • • PAYG withholding payment summary annual report (if not via STP)

Sole traders

  • • PSI test — do you fall under personal services income rules?
  • • Personal super contribution notices (if claiming)
  • • Private health insurance statement
  • • Bank interest from personal accounts holding business funds

Companies & trusts

  • • Distribution / dividend resolutions, dated before 30 June

EOFY tax-planning levers worth checking

  • • Instant asset write-off thresholds (check current limit)
  • • Prepaying expenses 12 months in advance
  • • Bad debts — written off before 30 June
